Kratom and Travel: Where Can You Take It and Where Should You Not?
Share
Countries in Europe where kratom is legal or tolerated
In many European countries, kratom is considered legal.
These states include:
- Czech Republic – Kratom is legal and freely available.
- Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania
-
In these countries, kratom is not explicitly regulated, so its possession for personal use does not pose a problem.
-
Switzerland – Legal, but import conditions can be strict, especially regarding quantities.
- Netherlands – Legal, often available in specialty stores.
- Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain – Legal for personal use, but local restrictions may apply in some regions (e.g. South Tyrol in Italy).
Travel tip:
It is recommended to check the current situation before traveling, as legislation can change quickly.
Countries where kratom is banned
On the other hand, there are countries where the possession or use of kratom is strictly prohibited. The most well-known include:
- Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Slovakia – Kratom is classified as an illegal drug.
- Norway – Illegal for import and use.
- Lithuania, Latvia – Kratom is prohibited, including import and distribution.
- Great Britain
If you are heading outside of Europe, be especially careful in these countries:
- Australia, New Zealand – Strictly prohibited, may result in heavy fines or imprisonment.
- USA – Legislation varies from state to state – in some states it is legal, in others it is completely prohibited (e.g. Alabama, Vermont).
- UAE - it is prohibited. In most Middle Eastern countries it is prohibited and not recommended to take it with you.
- Egypt - I couldn't find any information, but I wouldn't recommend it - apparently the legislation is unclear and could cause a problem.
Risks associated with traveling with kratom
1. Confiscation at the airport
Many customs authorities consider kratom a “suspicious product.” If you want to transport it, the packaging should be original, clearly marked, and ideally accompanied by a certificate of origin.
2. High fines and prison sentences
In countries where kratom is banned, possession can lead to heavy fines or even criminal prosecution. In some Southeast Asian countries, the penalties are particularly severe.
3. Misinterpretation of legislation
Laws in some countries may change without prior notice. It is recommended to contact the embassy of the destination country before traveling to verify the latest information.
Final recommendations
- Check the rules before you travel. Always check the current legislation of the country you are traveling to.
- Leave kratom at home if you are unsure. In countries with unclear legislation, it is better to minimize the risk and not take kratom with you.
- Be careful with the quantity. Even in countries where it is legal, the quantity may be limited.
Traveling with kratom can be convenient if you do your research beforehand. Otherwise, it can cause more trouble than good. It's always better to be cautious and respect the rules of the countries you're visiting.
